I have been sour on real estate since I sold my home in Florida in 2006.  Back then, I predicted home prices were headed for a crash.  Many people thought I was crazy for saying it.  Today, my former Florida home is probably worth a little more than half of the selling price.
In one of my first articles on USAWatchdog.com in August of 2009, I said this about the real estate market forecast, “This does not mean there are not bargains out there in the market, but let’s not …

This week, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner proposed raising the debt ceiling by $2 trillion.  I thought, this should be big news!  After all, a trillion is a thousand billion.  This adds up to 2 thousand billion over the next 2 years!!  The mainstream media greeted this story with a great big yawn.

Osama Bin Laden Dead! Now what? The death of Osama Bin Laden is probably the biggest story of the year, and maybe the biggest since 9/11.  There are so many angles being covered such as the burial at sea, play-by-play details of the assassination operation from the White House Situation Room and the surprise announcement by Barack Obama last Sunday night of Osama Bin Laden’s death.

It appears economist Paul Krugman thinks the budget and the economy are not in that bad of shape because he thinks the dire warnings are overdone.  In his latest Op-Ed piece this week, he said, “When I listen to current discussions of the federal budget, the message I hear sounds like this: We’re in crisis! We must take drastic action immediately! And we must keep taxes low, if not actually cut them further!

It is looking more and more like the budget showdown between the Democrats and Republicans will turn into a government shutdown 2011 by this weekend. The Obama administration has already started to inform federal workers who will be required to still come to work and those who will be told to stay home.

The President and his supporters are going to great lengths to make it appear the military operation in Libya is not a war.  Deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes called the NATO bombing in Libya “kinetic military action,” but not war.

The U.S. signed on for another war this past weekend with Libya.  The action came after a much hyped U.N. Security Council resolution last week that allowed coalition nations “. . . to take all necessary measures to protect civilians under threat of attack in the country. . .”  The main component of the resolution is to enforce “a no-fly zone” so Libya’s leader, Muammar Gaddafi, cannot use air strikes against his own people.  This seems to be a noble action backed by the U.N. and the …

This weekend, violence continued to erupt in the Middle East.   In Libya, the Gaddafi government launched counter attacks against the rebels.  Many fear there is a full blown civil war brewing in that oil rich country.
Yemeni loyalists also staged counterattacks against anti-government protesters in hopes of dispersing them.  They used sticks and stones, but still, 25 people were reported injured.

Looking around the Middle East you can find turmoil and conflict almost everywhere you turn.  Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain, Jordan, Syria, Oman and Egypt have all been caught up in a fire storm of anti-government protests.  Some appear to be mostly peaceful, such as the pro-democracy movement in Egypt; and some are descending into bloody civil conflict, such as Libya.

What is going on in the Middle East is breathtaking and frightening at the same time.  The unrest and outright middle east revolution is not going to be a pathway to peace and prosperity.   Libya is sliding into a bloody civil war.  The military is in control of Egypt.  Riots and protests are intensifying in other countries in the region.  Meanwhile, the price of oil is spiking because of fears of supply disruption.

“Egypt will explode.”  That was the reaction on twitter from Mohamed ElBaradei to Hosni Mubarak’s announcement not to resign the Presidency of Egypt.  ElBaradei is a former Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency and Nobel Peace Prize winner.  Now, he has emerged as a leader of the opposition movement.

Just a few weeks ago, an uprising toppled a little known Tunisian leader (President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali.)  Tunisia is due west of Egypt, separated only by Libya.  About the only thing that seemed newsworthy was the family reportedly took flight with a ton and a half of gold.

The massacre that happened this past weekend in Tucson, Arizona, is a horrific tragedy.  Twenty people were shot (including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords), and six died at the hand of a lone gunman with a questionable mental history.  Yet, the country is now engaged in a discussion about what is and is not acceptable speech in America.    The local Sheriff, Clarence Dupnik, started the controversy at a press conference the day of the shootings by saying, “Let me say one thing, because people tend to pooh-pooh this business about all …

What is happening in the economy is signaling enormous changes for the U.S. and the world.  The scale of what the Federal Reserve is doing is unparalleled in human history.  No country has ever produced so much money and so much debt in such a short amount of time.   The Fed has embarked on another round of money printing (Quantitative Easing or QE2).

Now that the mid-term elections are over, it is time to get back to reality.  Just because House Minority Leader John Boehner is taking over for Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House doesn’t mean the economy will get better.  Yes, the Republicans can now, pretty much, put the kibosh on the Obama agenda with big victories in the House and Senate, but is that enough to turn things around?  In a word–no.
