IMAX on the Titanic

If you compare the U.S. economy to the Titanic disaster, we are at about same point in time as that famous ship was after it struck the iceberg.  Instead of a band playing on deck as the vessel took on water, we Americans have the equivalent of an IMAX theater, complete with surround sound, to keep us occupied as we meet our fate.  The mainstream media is acting as projectionist.  What images are they showing us to keep us occupied?  This week, the MSM has spared no expense in covering the Tiger Woods’ coming out party at the Masters Golf Tournament.  The serial adulterer is a top news story at every media outlet. Major time and resources are devoted to covering Woods’ every stroke, or should I say move.

The marital problems of Sandra Bullock and Jesse James is another “big” story the MSM cannot stop telling us about.  Yes, I know Ms. Bullock is a recent Academy Award Winner, and her winning is a story.  But, what are her marriage problems doing masquerading as a legitimate hard news story?  This is tabloid stuff at best and, yet, every network, newspaper and cable outlet treats this as real news!  It is not.  The Iraq war is real news.  Greedy bankers getting bonuses after wrecking the economy is real news.  The spiraling budget deficit that is sure to cause huge inflation is real news.  The Fed spending trillions bailing out domestic and foreign banks in secret is a news story, but far less time and resources are devoted to these topics in the mainstream media.

And get this!  I just heard on ABC News that Oprah has “snagged” the first Reille Hunter interview.  Good for Oprah!  The alleged home wrecking mistress of  John Edwards, who didn’t have a snow ball’s chance in hell of being elected president, IS NOT NEWS!  It is tabloid entertainment!!

Also, while ABC is laying off hundreds of legitimate news people, the story breaks that the Disney owned network paid $200,000 in 2008 to Casey Anthony, a mother who is on trial for allegedly killing her own daughter!  This is where valuable news dollars are being spent?  ABC says it did not pay for interviews but to license family photos and video of toddler Caylee Anthony.   ABC is not paying for interviews?  Hey David Westin, (President of ABC News) I have a deal for you!   I’ll sell you my baby pictures for 50 grand!  Not paying for interviews–absurd.

I used to work for ABC at Good Morning America as an investigative reporter for nearly 6 years.  Until 2005, I did stories about deadly defects, fraud, rip-offs and government waste the public needed to know about.  ABC let me spend money covering important stories, but the network seems to have redefined its priorities.   I don’t blame the rank and file at ABC for the sea change.  There are plenty of devoted journalists there.  I blame management– not just at ABC, but at all mainstream media.  They are all wasting valuable resources keeping America entertained while the ship of state sinks.

    Greg-

I detest the media for the most part. Early in the last presidential campaign I realized what was happening and made the decision to turn off my TV and it has not been turned on since. The only exception is a college football game and 24. I was a CNBC and FOX News junkie and now I only get my info from alternative sources like USA Watchdog, Drudge etc.

Keep pressing on Greg. We need education and we need the facts. You are appreciated!

    Hello Greg,

I have a different viewpoint than you do regarding the MSM. “Group think” and cognative dissonence are two factors involved with the demise of MSM. The leaders of the MSM are very liberal. They live, breath, and work in a bubble. None of them are grounded by real life. Silver spoons and “Haavard” law have sheltered their lives.

To them, Neo-Marxism sounds good as portrayed by the “connected” at last night’s cocktail party. Obama cares about the little people who toil in fly-over country (their opinion).

They are brainwashed stage-one thinkers. Ratings are going down because they don’t report the news fairly; we don’t want to watch propaganda segments.

Sometimes, I don’t agree with your opinions regarding the “route” causes of some probems. However, you source your stories and give both sides. You don’t hide your opinions behind a “cloak” of objectivety.

You are a combination of O’Reilly, Greta, Stossel, and Rivera.

    Thanks,
    markm

    Thank you Greg,
Your article congeals my suspicions that the major media outlets are derelict in their duties. To have it come from one with experience in investigative journalism is a perspective all citizens must consider. Thank you for your efforts as your mind set is rare from my perspective. Four years of attempting to have my local newspaper assess the dangerous and unregulated derivatives market yielded from the business editor, “If this is true then it would cause panic and mayhem to the public and that would not be responsible”.

Another example is the expose on ACORN. Outsiders performing the investigative journalism and instead of a congratulations the media attempts to discredit the story.

    • Greg

      Benevolent,
Thank you for taking the time to comment. When I first went to the networks it was not the way it is now. I feel the only change will come from the internet. Thank you again.

    Greg,
With regards to your last sentence, I’m convinced it’s all being done deliberately. I can’t prove this, but I think they’re working in cahoots with the Wall Street shysters to destroy this country. We’re going to have to do what happened in Kyrgyzstan today before too much longer.

    • Greg

      Tom,
I have some other people who say the same thing. Thank you for your comment.

I pick you up over on Jim’s site. I hope it is ok to link to you elsewhere, as I have people I want to read this.

BTW, did you know the Titanic was underwritten by Goldman?

      BobD,
You may link to this site all you want. I did not know there was a Goldman connection with the Titanic. That is really freaky!

  7. Elihu E. O'Dowd

    Dear Greg,

Refreshing to hear your story which confirms that the world in general, and the U.S. in particular, has lost its moral compass. It’s been occuring since the 50’s, but is now deteriorating exponentially!

    The OT prophet Isaiah said;
    “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil;
    Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness;
Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes
And clever in their own sight”!

Thank you for sharing for your candid view.

    Elihu

      Elihu,
Thank you for your kind and very insightful comment!!

I read JSMINESET.com on a regular basis and he linked your story today. I believe and have been saying that the media is owned by the elite and they have and are destroying the US and any semblance of democracy that is left there. I am a Canadian, which to many Republicans is almost a communist state, they say it more polite though, socialist. I worry that when the US implodes on itself that it will spillover and affect Canada.

I started a blog today, I do not know what else to do. I sit up here in Canada and watch in utter disbelief of the inaction by the American people, Wake the hell up. The few are not only stealing from you, but are robbing from generations well into the future and not of just money, their freedom. Okay Greg, I will read your stuff, but does anyone have a clear plan or ?

    • Greg

      Jack,
I fear things will have to get worse before they get better. I assure you there will be an America when all this is finished playing out. Thank you for your comment and “Never, Never, Never give up.”
      Greg

  9. Smitty

    Greg,
The most under reported story presently is the CFTC debacle on position limits. I am not going to rehash the loss of feed when Mr. Murphy spoke and the detestable lead-up to Mr. Murphy by the hideous Mr. Lothian, no– the story is with the whistleblower Mr. Maguire.
The fact that ANY whistleblower would have a “bizarre” hit and run accident the following day after being revealed without anyone of consequence investigating is flat out scary. If he does not testify, or worse yet ,if another “accident” were to occur I believe the CFTC should be held accountable. This incident along with other “coincidences” cannot but make one think that the Banksters are very nervous about position limits even as they threatened the board that they would take their business elsewhere. The U.S. citizen -NOW- more than ever needs an investigative press free of political leanings to fully reveal the depths of involvement that the major banks have on the Government of the once great United States Of America. Thank you

    • Greg

      Smitty,
I have talked about the CFTC scandal on the “Dawg” But I agree, it is way under reported and the implications are huge for everyone. Thank you for your comment!

Good Job however I have a bone to pick with those who think O’Reilly and the Fox folks are news. It’s mostly opinion with a small amount of news mixed in. They are the same as all the others and if you can’t see that I would ask you to please put down the Kool-Aid and think for yourself. You have the ability to do so, turning away from MSM is evidence. But I’m afraid you fallen into the same trap again. Journalism and unbiased reporting are becoming extinct in this country.

    • Greg

Thank you JC, No Kool-Aide here.

I remember you from Greensboro.. I think it was that um what was it called pm tonight or something like that. I would run into you occasionally and you always took time to talk to me. Im glad to hear you on 101.1. Are you back in Greensboro? And your right the state of the media in America is atrocious.

    • Greg

      Matt,
Yes I am back in N.C. but still travel for the job. Thank you for your support and kind words!
      Greg

  12. Bill

    Greg,

Thanks for your most informative article, your first hand knowledge of the media industry has been a
great eye opener. As an expat living in Australia, it appears that this general approach to reporting the news is even worse downunder, those that control the mainsteam media appear, to possess tentacles
    with a very long reach.
Many thanks for your ongoing work,
    Bill

    • Greg

      Bill,
Thank you for you support in the “Land Down Under.” There are several hundred of your “mates” who read the site there!

The reason the media is complicit in using ‘red -herrings’, and also fatuous’entertainment’ – and as Shakespeare said in Twelfth Night: “what the great one’s do the lesser will prattle of” – is to distract the masses from the truth, and this is now possible because ownership of media outlets is in the hands of just a few. These few have symbiotic links to big business, and also government, forming a wicked troika intent on one thing: perpetuating its own survival and enhanced power.

    • Greg

      Good comment Peter!

I think that tuning out of TV is one of the first, and most important, things that one can do to wake the hell up. Trying to get TV addicts to take note of the peril around them is a bit like living in the Land of the Lotus Eaters. Everyone is zoned out in the alternate reality provided by their TV high and they can’t be bothered with real life.

Frankly I think that is the REAL divide in America; not between parties or ideologies, but between TV addicts and those of us who have opted for reality.

Thanks Greg. As a jsmineset.com junkie who turned off MSM (including CNBC)4 years ago because of the 1/2 truths, lying by omission, and the Oprah factor, I am grateful for your professional observations. Let ‘er rip bro!

    • Greg

      Gary,
I too am a big fan of Mr. Sinclair. In fact, he has written a new book called “A Pocketbook Of Gold”. Here is the link: http://jsmineset.com/2010/04/08/a-pocketbook-of-gold/ Sinclair has been right on target for every big turn in the ongoing financial crisis and gold.

Money talks. Advertisers rule. Observe the ads and you identify the filter. Other than government and Wall Street programming manipulation, what changed over the past 10 years or so? Pharmaceuticals. The appalling drug pushing commercials are overwhelming and more than a coincidence.

I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s and the drumbeat of “don’t do drugs” was intense. These greed-motivated hypocrites have corrupted our way of life and brain washed the society into believing they are improving it. Now the drumbeat is “do our drugs but we’ll arrest you if you do others”. The brainwashing gets passed through the parents to the most innocent – children. They get put on pills from any early age. God forbid you use spanking for discipline, as you’ll be accused of abuse. Just dumb them down instead with mood alterations to keep them quiet and we’ll live happily ever after. It’s criminal.

The pharmaceuticals are on par with the likes of Goldman Sachs. No conscience. Unbridled greed protected by corrupted government and justice. They filter the mainstream media, dumb down the journalism to protect their markets, and then sell us pills to make us feel better. Yes, we are sick. But pills are not going to fix what is really wrong.

Once again, I say thank you Greg Hunter for your courage in the face of this evil.

      Anobodysmallcityusa,

    Greg:

The Wall Street Investment banks have evolved into the world’s most efficient financial parasites. They thrive off the nutrients provided by their “clients” (i.e. hosts).

Over time, they will exceed the host’s ability to provide sustainability to both. The host will then die, and the parasites will move elsewhere.

Parasites can be effectively treated, but the medicine can be expensive. I fear our government can’t, or won’t, pay for the procedure. God help us all.

    Be safe,

    John Baker DVM

      John,
Wall Street has wrecked the country! I hope there is something left when everybody wakes up. Thank you for taking the time to write.

Well, said. It has been teeth grinding to me to see what passes as news today when there is so much more going on that needs to be shouted from the roof tops.

What I don’t understand and is really even more frustrating to me is that a vast number of the populace is eating this stuff up and clamoring for more. It’s like the stuff the wicked witch fed one of the kids in that CS Lewis movie, “The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe,” where he couldn’t get enough of the stuff to the point of turning on his own family.

People are turning on their own country and freedom by ignoring what they are giving away for this feel good and peeping-Tom mentality.

    • Greg

      Hal,
Thank you so much. We all feel your pain.

I quote from Don Henley’s song “Dirty Laundry”,” Dirty little secrets …Dirty little lies… We got our finger’s in everyone’s pie…We love to cut you down…Kick em’ when they’re up…Kick em’ when they’re down…We love to cut you down …We love dirty laundry” What a prolific song ,so pertinent to today’s MSM. MSM’s motto should be “Crap is King”.It’s sad that today’s news we get is so demented & irresponsible journalism. Greg ,what a great sound bite ( Dirty Laundry)would be for your blog…Keep on… keeping on. Great site!
