This week, we had an extreme weather forecast in the Midwest. They said winds could reach 60 to 70 miles per hour in some places. They also said large hail could be coming with it. Nothing is more conducive to knocking out your power than high winds, heavy rains and large hail.

FBI Director Christopher Wray said hacking risks to U.S. national and economic security are “upon us now,” adding that “critical infrastructure” is a prime target.
This is not fear porn by the FBI. Given the war environment we are facing, I think Director Wray is giving a legit warning. By the way, Wray has been giving these types of warnings since October of last year. You need some real power backup for emergencies. If for nothing else, you need power to run your freezer or refrigerator so you don’t lose your food when you need it most.

Really believe you need a layered approach as you stayed. I couldn’t find the product spec sheets for this kit. I will try to call them this weekend when I have time to talk. While I am looking to stay here and this would be integrated into a full house system, the idea that I could roll it to a van with some solar panels. I wonder if you could charge both car and solar at same time. But if one of my friends have issues, I could move this in an emergency.

That’s a reason to also consider a dual fuel or tri-fuel generator.
I have a couple of Honda 2000is (they now make a 2200i instead) that I can pair together and plug into the inlet box connected to the house panel and run one leg. My electrician installed a lockout and grouped the most important circuits for me on the one leg.
Last week, I picked up a Predator 5000 watt dual fuel generator from Harbor Freight during their Spring Black Friday sale for $899 ($200 off).
I’ll probably use the Honda’s first (both are quiet, but the Hondas are the quietest), and run the Predator on propane if gas is hard to get, or I just don’t want to deal with daily refueling. Also, gas goes bad even with stabilizers while propane really doesn’t degrade. I did order a couple 30 lb propane tanks to go with my three 20 lb tanks.
Hondas of course are much more expensive, but they are fuel-injected and you don’t have to mess with carburetor jet changes for altitude. If you are staying in one location, you change the jet and you’re done. If you are traveling up and down, it probably makes sense to go fuel injection so you don’t have to constantly change out fuel jets. It’s doable, but not a ten-minute job. It will take an hour or two or more depending on how proficient you are with the process. Online videos are your friend…
You get a little more power with gas, but the tradeoff is worth it to have redundancy and sustainability over a longer period.
I’ll have to check out the solar options above to maximize my flexibility and options. That’s pretty much all I know to do, and the rest is in God’s hands…

I haven’t looked into it, but they apparently do make a tri-fuel aftermarket kit for the Predator 5000 from Harbor Freight.
Since I do have natural gas, I will look into it. I’m not really a believer in whole house gensets that are 16kw or larger, since they are fuel hungry and expensive to operate.
But if I can run a 5k for extended periods, while still costly, I’ve got a chance for sustainability.
I can’t vouch for this guy, but there is more information coming out all the time for tri-fuel kits. FYI…

Talked to a good friend a while back after I got a quote for a LP whole home system. I had thought LP was the way to go because I didn’t need to condition or filter like you do diesel.
Problem is that LP units burn about 3 gallons an hour at load while a diesel would burn about a gallon. I wanted to have a 30 day supply of fuel.
They suggested a 500 gallon LP tank. I also want the power output conditioned to clean power so it won’t damage my electronics.
Waiting on a second quote for diesel with a 500 gallon tank.
Also an old beater car with a diesel. A lot of farms around here so I can rotate it out and or trade for local produce, eggs, beef IF things get really bad. And why do I think things are gonna get really bad? The fuktards running our country (Biden isn’t running anything, not even bath water) hate us and want us destroyed. They think they will be ok. Personally, I think their own guards will kill them but I am straying far afield.

Good points about diesel. Many people don’t run the numbers to consider the costs when the generator comes on and stays on.
I agree we are in a mess…and think could be in 1922 Wiemar Germany. In mid-1922, a tipping point was reached, and over the next 18 months, inflation went exponential.
We keep sending billions we don’t have everywhere. Insane.
With regard to dual fuel (and the carbureted units), one thing I left out is that the altitude and re-jetting issues are moot if you run on propane. You get a little less power than gas, but you lose some power at altitude regardless.
So, at altitude you have two good options: fuel injection or propane.
As you and Greg said: Layering. We do the best we can.

What is Ironic is Beijing Biden is letting tons of military Chinese over the border. Harder to stop a hacker in the country than outside.
I have a pair of the DeltaPro’s with the combining cable where it will generate 220 Volts for my deep water well. I use it also among other useful electrical items like the deep freeze, fridge and a small cooking appliance ( don’t need the entire stove or oven during a power outage) lights, etc. and the system has already run through the paces of an electrical outage.
With the Pro’s, you should get the electrical power control box that they recommend to go with….it will make connecting electricity a lot easier to do within the proper limits of the Pro’s considering power distribution without brownouts or other electrical negative disturbances.
Having the Solar Panels is important although they don’t have to be EcoFlow’s brand.
A gas fueled generator where the Sun will not cooperate with your Solar Panels is also important to regenerate the batteries in them as needed. EcoFlow has such a generator which connects to them through your phone to monitor and to conserve fuel in several ways even in shutting it down and starting up as needed instead of continuously running – that’s a bonus that I can recommend also.

The output from the EcoFlow unit (s) is (are) all battery power, of course, through a very clean and very high quality inverter. Plus, the clean power produced doesn’t change when used in tandem where the output is actually better than the GRID that varies much more than many would think possible – as in power spikes, surges, and or brown out low output anamolies which the Pro’s do not do.
I picked up my EcoFlow Pro system when they were crowd sourcing and have the older Gasoline Generator version….the new version offers both Gasoline and Propane to power it up. Either Generator version is simply used to recharge the batteries of the Pro’s and the Pro’s can be used simultaneously while being recharged from any source – solar, wind genny or from any other outside power source.
Bottom line there is no issue of destabilization through the units, however, one must be cognizant of powering up more than the unit (s) even combined are capable of supplying…that’s where the power panel is important to use as a flow through that has electrical breakers built into it with limit factors as a design. There’s a bit of a learning curve with it but, not much really.

Greg, I am just commenting to let your readers know this system is the bomb. I have had one for about a year now and it delivers huge peace of mind. No, it will not run your whole house but it will keep the lights and refrigerator going and a room AC if you need it. It can be charged with solar panels, which does take time, or with a gas generator in about an hour. In our case we have tower gardens that use small submersible pumps which this will also run, meaning I don’t lose my vegetables when the power goes out. It’s a great system that I highly recommend.

Some guy on YouTube said you could use a gas generator to charge up the solar generator. Then you would only have to run the gas generator for an hour 2 or 3 times a day. So you wouldn’t have to hear that noise all day. The gas or propane would last much longer if you only ran it only 1 or 2 hours a day.

You can and I have done it. You can also keep a solar generator charged by plugging it in to any 110 outlet.
