Ground Zero Mosque is a Distraction
By Greg Hunter’s USAWatchdog.com I think the problems we face as a nation are much more important than building a mosque in lower Manhattan. The only reason I am writing about this is because it is an issue that I feel is being used to distract the country from the PROFOUND financial problems we face. They have now got the attention of the military. Adm. Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, warned last week that the national debt is the single biggest threat to national security! I do not believe this is spin! Mullen claims interest on the national debt will equal the entire defense budget by 2012–$600 billion in just interest.(Click here for the complete Mullen story.) There is also the issue of the U.S. being broke, and without “Enron” accounting the country is really $202 trillion in the hole. This, according to Boston University economics professor Laurence Kotlikoff. (Click here for the Kotlikoff story.) Why don’t we hear politicians and the mainstream media open a national debate on these very important issues? That said, here is the way I feel about the Ground Zero Mosque. I was living in New York City at the time of the 9/11 attack. My wife stood on the roof of our 40 story building at 63rd and West End Avenue and watched the second tower fall. I was in Colorado at the time on assignment and drove across the country on little sleep to get back home. All the flags I came across on I-80 were at half mast. It was a horrible and sad time in America. The whole country was hurting. Everybody knows where they were and what they were doing when they heard the news of the attack. My story is nothing special. I wish they would build the mosque somewhere else. I, like millions of other Americans, think it is in bad taste and insensitive. Just because I think it should notbe placed so close to Ground Zero doesn’t mean I’m Islamophobic or a bigot. If this really is all about “healing,” moving it would be the best PR move the Imam of the Ground Zero Mosque could make. That probably is not going to happen, but I still hold out hope. Therefore, I fully support the right to build it there because I believe in the U.S. Constitution. I believe in religious freedom and private property rights. You cannot cherry pick what you believe when it comes to the Constitution. I also believe people have the right to bear arms. I despise gun control. I believe in free speech, whether it is said by the Ku Klux Klan or the Black Panthers. I think both groups are repugnant, but I support the Constitutional right for anyone to have their say in America. I also believe in equal protection under the law, which is a major tenant of the founding fathers and the Constitution. Guess where I stand on the gay marriage issue? I am not a Klansman, a gun nut, gay, Muslim and I don’t own a home, but I am a citizen who believes in the Constitution—the whole Constitution. Recently, Congressman Ron Paul made a lengthy statement about the Ground Zero Mosque. Here is his part of his statement: “Is the controversy over building a mosque near ground zero a grand distraction or a grand opportunity? Or is it, once again, grandiose demagoguery? It has been said, “Nero fiddled while Rome burned.” Are we not overly preoccupied with this controversy, now being used in various ways by grandstanding politicians? It looks to me like the politicians are “fiddling while the economy burns.” The debate should have provided the conservative defenders of property rights with a perfect example of how the right to own property also protects the 1st Amendment rights of assembly and religion by supporting the building of the mosque. Instead, we hear lip service given to the property rights position while demanding that the need to be “sensitive” requires an all-out assault on the building of a mosque, several blocks from “ground zero.” Just think of what might (not) have happened if the whole issue had been ignored and the national debate stuck with war, peace, and prosperity. There certainly would have been a lot less emotionalism on both sides. The fact that so much attention has been given the mosque debate, raises the question of just why and driven by whom? In my opinion it has come from the neo-conservatives who demand continual war in the Middle East and Central Asia and are compelled to constantly justify it. They never miss a chance to use hatred toward Muslims to rally support for the ill conceived preventative wars. A select quote from soldiers from in Afghanistan and Iraq expressing concern over the mosque is pure propaganda and an affront to their bravery and sacrifice. (Click here for the complete Ron Paul statement.) I want to wrap up this post with something I saw on The Daily Show with John Stewart. There are plenty of issues I disagree on with Mr. Stewart. Many people think he is a journalist—he’s not. He often comes off-one sided and unfair. I have seen him cut sound bites short to completely change the meaning of what is said just to make a fool of someone. Please do not dismiss this as some liberal attack. It’s not. In this case, The Daily Show uses Charlton Heston’s own words to make a very big point. Please watch the video and keep in mind this comes from a comedian who freely admits he does “fake news,” but in this case, he just might be telling the truth.

STOP watching Steward.
You say that they “Muslims” have a constitutional right to build a mosque there. OK
Then you compare their freedom of religion to gun rights.
We don’t have gun rights. I can’t buy any machine gun in California, I can only buy guns that state of California fits to deem to be acceptable.
I can’t modify guns and I can go on and on about how limited gun rights are in California.
Also states like Illinois, have super strict gun laws, that are build in such fashion that plp just give up and don’t buy them because it takes too much time to get a gun (too much red tape).
Building this mosque is super easy get a permit pay the $ and there you go.
Now lets apply these rules to freedom religion and say that mosques in California can only be build to the California specifications , and Illinois mosques have have to have sh** load of permits and in Washington DC you don’t have the right to build a mosque at all because that state BAND IT. Sounds crazy huh ? Where is your constitution now? Its dead.
So in this case, not only mosque is going to be build in ground zero but most likely PUBLIC FUNDS are going to be used.
Where are my right?
So sit down, shut up and pay your taxes and be happy that we don’t take more.
This whole discussion is very similar to discussion about Obama and his critics. If you say something bad about him you are a racist even if YOU VOTED for him.
Stewards analogies are dumb and intellectually shallow.
I just watched Obamas interview with John Williams on NBC
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0810/41575.html
No questions about the deficit, just bunch of softballs.
Keep buying silver till your fingers bleed!
Grom,
I love the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. Good tip on silver too!! Thank you for the comment.
Greg
I concur with Grom,
Yeah Greg, you and Ron Paul are spinning this debate just like Stewart spins all of his topics to get ratings. Your right about one thing Greg, Stewart is not a journalist, just like Rash Limburger is not a journalist. Now, when things get hot, Rush has a serious take on issues that is worth listening too, bombast aside. Stewart has no redeeming value.
Grom’s analogy with guns is correct. In CA, we can legally unloaded-open-carry sidearms. Too bad our Fourth Amendment rights will be trampled-on by Law Enforcement, and sometimes, the SWAT team is called out.
The Mosque issue is really simple. The First Amendment created a creator granted and Constitutionally guaranteed right to freedom of religion. However, SCOTUS has ruled that our creator granted right to private property requires jurisdictions to have General Plans, Zoning Plans, and Planning Commissions to regulate private property usage.
We don’t want a Mosque next to a garbage dump or an industrial area; that is what zoning is all about. The placement of buildings and types of business is highly regulated, because of SCOTUS.
The Mosque does not belong at Ground Zero if the Greek Orthodox Church that was destroyed by the Islamo-Fascists on 9/11 can’t be rebuilt. The Greek Orthodox Church can’t get permits to rebuild. How is that for freedom of religion!
Here is an article about 4A rights being trampled: http://www.examiner.com/gun-rights-in-washington-dc/alamogordo-police-pay-21-000-to-settle-open-carry-lawsuit
Here is Judge Black’s ruling: http://www.nmcourt.fed.us/Drs-Web/view-file?full-path-file-name=%2Fdata%2Fdrs%2Fdm%2Fdocuments%2Fndd%2F2009%2F09%2F08%2F0002561429-0000000000-08cv00994.pdf
Gun rights my butt!
No right is absolute!!!!! If rights were absolute, somebody else’s rights would be trampled on!!! My rights end at your nose, or your property line. If you devalue my property by using your property, you have just violated my property rights.
The drafters of our Declaration of Independence and Constitution were divinely inspired. They wrote those documents by candlelight!
thanks,
markm
Thank you MarkM for expressing your constitutional right to free speech here on USAWatchdog.com.
Greg
Thanks Greg for your forum!
Free Speech:
SCOTUS has delineated between “private” and “public” people. We can say or write almost anything about Messiah Obama and to a lesser degree, you. You are a public person. I am not.
What I am trying to say is, don’t slander or lible me, as I have recourse. Our Messiah has no recourse. Free Speech regarding my actions (or non-actions) is different than President Obama’s.
There is a limit to “Free Speech.” In reality, free speech means “free political speech” and nothing more.
There are no absolute rights.
My right to life is not absolute as it may be taken away by “due process of the law”.
We have the legal right to demand that the “Cordoba” mosque be placed on a more appropriate site. The New York Planning Commission and City Council are political bodies, their job is too make political decisions such as the mosque’s placement.

Greg –
Just recently found your blog and I have to say I think its quite refreshing to read a blog that is unbiased (neither right/left leaning) and that really brings key issues to the forefront. Keep up the good work!
As a practicing Muslim (let the dirty comments begin I suppose) I have to say that I respect your right to your opinion concerning the Mosque being in “bad taste” as it currently is planned though they do have a right to build it. This opinion is a pretty popular opinion nowadays but i’m curious why is it in “bad taste”? There’s a suggestion that somehow a mosque insults the memory of 9/11 victims. 1) There were a number of MUSLIM 9/11 victims in the towers and 2) Our wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are supposedly not religiously oriented yet we believe it to be an insult to have a mosque within 2 blocks of 9/11 memorial? Its a “We’re here to help! But don’t try to build one of your religious centers near our memorial because we still blame you.” – Sounds like a bit of hypocrisy there..
Either way, I think you’ve brought up the excellent point (I dont know how I missed it) about how this issue is really NOT an issue that should be all over the news and the primary thing talked about nowadays. It seems like we are indeed playing that fiddle while the country burns!
Thanks for the honest reporting and keep it up!
Spider,
I feel the GZM is in bad taste because so many feel insulted by its location. The stated purpose of the Mosque is to promote healing. Just the opposite is happening. That said, you also make some very good points. I don’t want to forget my main point and that the whole issue is a distraction. Thank you for weighing in with your views on this topic.
Greg
A non Muslim cannot even visit Mecca, no Bibles allowed in Saudi Arabia. No religious or very much of any kind of freedom in Iran and many other Islamic nations. The mosque is a distraction from the real problem which is a titanic struggle between cultures. To some degree our national financial problems are also a distraction from the struggle between the US constitution and progressive liberalism.
As one can clearly see from the postings this diversionary tactic is working. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out. I hope without bloodshed but am not optimistic
John,
Point taken. Thank you.
Greg
They have every right to build the mosque.
We have every right to own guns.
They are willing to fight for their right.
We, as a citizenship, were willing to subjugate our right. It was done by shallow thinking, fearful people.
Those who fight for their rights get to keep them. This may be worth remembering…
Thanks Chuck.
Greg
Greg,it has been reported that a Greek Orthodox church had been denied the right to rebuild their church on the very ground that it stood before being distroyed on 911.
Most people who are against the ground zero mosgue see it for what it is, which is a victory mosgue.
The Tea Party has for the most part been a one issue organization with the national debt being front and center. They are demonized by the main stream media, Obama, all democrates, and a considerable number of republicans.
If the ground zero mosgue was not in the headlines, do you really think the national debt would become a prime topic? I don’t.
It is a sorry situation that the national debt along with all the underfunded entitlements gets such little coverage.
Dave,
I am not familiar with the Greek Orthodox church issue. I think the Tea Party has every right to be on every state ballot this fall. Thank you for your comment.
Greg
I totally agree with you Greg. I loathe their chosen location, but support their rights both property and reglious.
I do belive this is a pre-election distraction. Keep the people distracted and pointing fingers. Anything to keep their little minds off the failing economy. The 24 hours news keeps the hornets nest stirred up.
Thank you Jan for your support.
Greg
Greg,
Don’t you think it would be fair play for the US to allow the mosque to be built anywhere; just a soon as we obain permission from the Saudis to build a Christian church, a Jewish synagogue, et al., in Mecca, Medina, et.al.?
Eli,
I understand your point and in the spirit of fair play it is valid. As a constitutional argument it is not. Thank you for weighing in. I’ll say it again, my main point with the article is with the financial crisis we are facing. Not many want to talk about that, and this is an issue that WILL affect everyone in the U. .S. and many outside the U.S. Remember, Good men can Dissagree.
Greg
Greg, let me rant & vent my anger.I see this as a huge distraction to what is really going on in this nation,Obama has been the great divider,he has split this nation apart with his far left progressive ideals, rules, regulations that has cost trillions to a failing economy. He panders to the unions while the rest of the nation tries to survive. So many now depend on gov hand outs to live day to day,our health care has gone down the drain along with the hope to bring back the millions of jobs that gave way to the Green Energy Movement where billions have been wasted or lined the pockets of special interest. There’s no way to expect our nation to compete in this world with out fossil fuels to run power grids & transportation that supports our populations needs! Iran’s leaders are laughing out at our politicians that pass laws without knowing what the outcome of these laws will have on our economy & our freedoms! The media elites are using this story to cover up their own failures to report the truth of the biggest thief of the wealth by Wall Street Banks led by the Federal Reserve from Americans by manipulating world markets, debasing the dollar by deflation & inflation. The real problems all lead back to the creation of the Federal Reserve Banking Cartel & its owners & until we get that on the front page of all news outlets where the politicians will have to answer to the people why they let the Fed relieve congress from their duties to set & control monetary policy stated in our Constitution. Most in Congress act in their on self interest & that has to change now or we will follow the Greek as they suffer from corrupt banksters & politicians who acted in their own self interest. Americans, congress dropped the ball again, a complete Audit of the Fed is dead!WHAT IS THE FEDERAL RESERVE BANKING CARTEL HIDING? A audit of the fed & its owners by a independent group with no ties to any government or politicians is needed now! Expose the the vial evil doings of the Fed since it came to our soil, not just to Americans, but people’s around the world, there is so much blood on the Feds hands,Americans we must demand to see all of their operations in the open, expose all of their secrete dealings to the public! We know one thing for sure, the Fed Owners financed both sides in War II,it profits off all wars,it has control of the Gold & Silver markets & that has been known for years, but the MSM just does as their Masters tells them to do,cover stories that keeps the light off of them as they continue to steal the wealth of Americans as well that of nations who has made deals with this group of evil people. Its like the story of many States in the N.East have been on the Cap & Trade system of trading carbon credits,it got one day in the news on fox biz, then it went silent, why? It did not pit one group against another, but it should have because those States are paying higher energy prices?! Just how many people have now become to rely on some form of gov hand outs? Its big, real big, try to wrap your mind around this number as of this morning,1 out of 6 Americans rely on a gov hand out to get by! The ground zero story is just a diversion to keep the fed out of the lime light,if you study the history of the Rothschild’s,you will find they always try to remain stealth by using agents to do their dirty work to gain complete control over the wealth of a nation. Congress passed a law to help consumers, but the credit card companies just raised the USURY rates to make up for what the lawyers put in the bill that our congress never reads,so the public loses again to the BANKSTERS,what progress we get from these fools that get to DC & never want to leave.Voters get screwed by both parties, yet they vote them back in, the Dumbing down of Americans began in our public schools & continues today. Greg, watch the prices of pork, beef & most of all food we use daily because it is really hurting those living on a Fixed income, the working poor & disabled. It’s a sad day for millions in the USA that will not eat because of greed of the rulers of the Fed!
Mickey S,
I appreciate your passion. Thank you for the commnet.
Greg
Great Article Greg! I especially enjoyed the video from Stewart. The bottom line is that even though we might feel something is in poor taste, we can’t discount the freedoms we have in this country of speech and religion. While it does seem that over the years, various freedoms are slowly being taken away from us (a.k.a. patriot act etc..) there are times like these that we can still count of some of them remaining strong. As far as “distractions”, I couldn’t concur more. It still amazes me that we don’t see REAL serious discussions on the news or talk shows about how the heck we are going to get back jobs in this country. The main stream media just puts out “stats” about the unemployment rate, foreclosure rates, interest rates, inflation rates, where Paris Hilton rates, but no serious dialog about where jobs will come from. Wasn’t there a jobs summit that was going to take place in Washington? Was the topic of “outsourcing” discussed? probably not, because Corporations control everything from the media to the government and everything in between. There will be no real jobs creation till the Corporations deem it is important! There are thousands of people suffering in our country…. A few weeks ago I read an article about how 30 thousand people showed up down in Atlanta, GA for an application for government housing. 30,000 people, and just for an application!! The crowd was so big that it got a little out of control and some people actually got hurt. Of course mainstream media barely covered this story… probably because the Corporations don’t want us all to know that 30,000 people can gather for one common purpose. Or maybe they just don’t want us to know how bad things really are in some states.
Liz,
Thank you for your comment and support.
Greg
Hi Greg.
Still think the questions you ask here can only have meaningless answers until the bigger question is adequately addressed – the one posed in your reprint of Paul Craig Roberts’ article way back in March, wherein he “signed off” because nothing else matters until the Big Question of who really instigated 9-11 and why is resolutely resolved. Until then everything, and I mean EVERYTHING else is a distraction – from both the truth, and a meaningful path to follow forward into any kind of viable future.
BTW, thank you for your great work and devotion to the good fight; you are a paragon of integrity, the last I fear of a dying breed of journalist. I’m a really big fan – and not just because we share the same name 😉
Gregory
GD Swain,
All good points. Thank you.
Greg
great article and bravo Mickey for your on the mark rant. The only discussion i never see and feel we all will be talking about very shortly is the fact that as a world we have turned from God.God created the universe God gave us ten rules to live by and God Takes away ,By looking at the mess were in I am assured the real culprit behind everything you spoke about mickey is a being called satan. But that sounds like crazy bullshit, so keep your heads in the sand and try to find the answers, good luck with that.Rephil , just a normal want to know the truh Guy
greg, i am just a non middle class family man veteran. i looked this over and yes this could be a distraction, there are many distractions. mainly media that make ignorance “bliss.” But as a former marine i cannot ignore the fact that all the sudden there are mosques, one being finished locally in my town. I must be vigilant and open minded too, my family depends on it! I have young kids and i am gonna be dammed if i let any danger in my families’ life. There is change happening, i cannot tell anyone what’s going to happen, whether america is going to be the next musslim ran country, or we are in big trouble because of money problems….we need a “solution” for the american family! What can we do? or what do we need to prepare for in the next months or years (2012 scare). All i see and hear every day around me is scare, scare, scare. We need to get a plan now for the honest american family…soon.
P.s. what is your take on martial law in america coming soon as this november?(recent you tube news!) thank you for your time sir.
Shaun,
My main concern right now is that there will be some sort of major devaluation of the U.S. dollar. If that happens (and I think it will at a minimum) everything we import will rise in price. I am mainly talking oil here. There could be a bout of deflation first but inflation is the long-term problem. Try stocking up on necessities. Motor oil, canned food, dry food thinks you can stockpile at low cost with safety. Put this address into your browser and read this post for a few more ideas. http://www.infowars.com/10-practical-steps-that-you-can-take-to-insulate-yourself-at-least-somewhat-from-the-coming-economic-collapse/print/ What you need to worry about is the economy not the mosques. Thank you for your comment.
Greg
thanks for the great advice, i will do just that and thank you again sir!
Shaun,
Let me know how you progress. You can always email me as well.
Greg
Hello Greg,
I found your site by visiting http://www.daily-ops.com. I was completely unaware of this type of discourse on the internet and am happy I found you all. I can only hope that others begin to find this different way of thinking about current events.
Keep up the good work!
Mike
Thank you Mike for the kind words and support.
greg
Imagine if “god” and money didn’t rule our collective discussion.
Solutions would be rampant, war(S) over.
Blind allegiance to the casino (Wall street) and religion render a population incapable of empathy or judgement.
Irony 101.
Paul R,
John Lennon comes to mind as I read your comment. “All we are saying is give peace a chance.” Thank you.
Greg
i’ve said before, this administration in particular, washington in general, is using the same tactics as vladimir lenin in the early days of the soviet union.
the mosque debate, the constant vacations, the oil spill, charlie rangel, fcc, epa, arizona, and on and on and on.
all the while appointments are being made, legislation passed, and states are being enslaved by federal bailouts. all with only a passing glimpse by those who used to be americas gatekeepers, the free press.
to me, the objective is clear. cement control of the United States by the federal government, or collapse it. one of those ‘ if i can’t have her, no one will” scenarios.
two phrases come to mind. “we are the ones we’ve been waiting for”, and “we’ve overcome the weight of our politics”.
think about that second one for a while, it’ll come to you.
thanks greg.
Bean,
You are right the media is doing nothing the same as it did under Bush 43. This is one of my recurring themes. Thank you for reminding us all of this fact.
Greg
Lets suppose 911 WASNT done by Muslims but by highly influential people within the US govt structure. International intelligence types even. Lets then suppose that this same group has influence in NYC, able to deny a Greek Orthodox Church a building permit but grant or even initiate the construction of a Mosque in the same site. It HAS surfaced that the “Mosque” is being funded by people who are NOT Muslim but in fact Jewish.
Now lets say that despite being Jewish they were Zionist and wanted to foment bitterness towards Muslims KNOWING that the majority of Americans still respond to anything 911-related with highly emotional anti-Muslim sentiment. Lets suppose they even denied the Greek Orthodox Church a permit to stoke outrage. Its not a stretch to say that Jews control NYC AND have tremendous influence and presence throughout the govt structure ala AIPAC.
So now we have mountains of discussion about exactly the things these influentiual people would want us to talk about if all the above were true. People are responding as if somehow Muslims are controlling the issuance of building permits in NYC despite the obvious dominance over not only NY politics but DC politics by Jews or rather Zionists.
Is it a stretch to say that Zionists are playing us like a room full of violins?
Cos Steven,
There is no evidence to back up this scenario. Yes, it is a “stretch” to say Zionists are playing us. I will say, everybody in the game has a dog in the fight and everybody wants their dog to come out on top. Thank you for the comment.
Greg
Define “evidence.”
http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/declassified-senate-investigation-files-reveal-clandestine-israeli-pr-campaign-in-america-100976089.html
Cos Seven,
A “Clandestine Israeli PR Campaign in America” is a long way from being the masterminds of the 9/11 attacks. Nice try but not evidence. Thank you for your comment and support.
Greg
Although multiple millions of critically thinking Americans already believe the “Official” story of 9/11 is a bald-faced, pre-fabricated lie, and that the horrendous crime of 9/11 was an inside job, with an emphasis on mossad and other zionist neocons, apparantly still more Americans need to wake up to this. Visit Architects and Engineeres for 9/11 Truth (AE9/11TRUTH), Scholars for 9/11 Truth, ReDiscover9/11.com. The Physics of 9/11, Fire Fighters for 9/11 Truth. The Truth movement is growing, and the big question about 9/11 is “cui bono”, who beneifits from making Americans hate Muslims? This is what America has become, a brainless, Muslim killing pitbull. All these wars are manufactured from lies. Remember the Niger Forgeries, the Yellow Cake that Sadam was supposedly trying to procure for the manufacturing od nuclear weapons. Toatlly made up by the war-loving neocons who’s allegiance is to a foreign nation (Israel). Thats where the focus should be.
Peter,
I don’t see hard evidence that 9/11 was caused by “zionist neocons.” Innuendo is not evedence. Is there more to the story? I think so. I don’t proclaim to know what really happened or who did it but I would like to see a new invesigation into 9/11 by unbiased researchers. Thank you for your comment and perspective.
Greg
I just wish conservatives would be as forceful in their endorsement of freedom of religion as they are in their endorsement of freedom of the press.
Grady,
Amen to that brother!
Greg
I think people are so caught up in the rhetoric of the GZM, no one is reporting on where the money is coming from and who the key supporters are. For instance, Imam Rauf is on the Religious Advisory Board of the Council on Foreign Relations, along with Jim Wallis, who ran favorable mosque articles in his magazine, Sojourners. A large supporter of the Cordoba Initiative is the American Society for Muslim Advancement. Who financially supports the ASMA? The Rockefeller Foundation, the Carnegie Foundation of New York, and a slew of other foundations- all American.
So my question is, why does David Rockefeller and his ilk want to alienate the American people so bad? I would guess it would be to distract them from the demise of our economy and to keep up the animosity with Islam.
Republicanmother,
You may be on to something here. Thank you.
Greg
